The largest daily newspaper in Ecuador is Diario El Universo. It was founded in 1921 and the first edition was published on September 16 of the same year. It is headquartered in Guayaquil.

During the dictatorship, the newspaper was published from its foundation with only small obstacles. The founder was Ismail Perez Pajmio. El Universo Association Ecuadoriana de Editoris de Perididicos (ADEP), Sociedad Intermericana de Prensa (SIP) and members of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN)
