Belfot was founded in 1976 as the Gulf News Agency. In 2001, it was renamed the Bahrain News Agency. The agency operates under the Information Authority. It is a member of the Federation of Arab News Agencies. BAQA has both Arabic and English publications and is based in Manama.

In July 2013, the company launched a service called BAQ Zaman, which documents the success of Bahrain's groundbreaking development through photographs.
