Basic Details

Kronen Zeitung, commonly known as Kronen, is the largest newspaper in Austria. It is known to be Euroseptic.

The first issue of Kronen Zeitung was published on January 2, 1900. Former Army officer Gustav Davis was its founder. One crown is mentioned as the name of the monthly purchase price (it does not refer to the royal crown) which was made possible in recent newspapers after the abolition of bureaucratic duty (Zeitungstampeljbihar) on 31 December 1899.

The paper fought in its first three years in the neighboring Kingdom of Serbia until the assassination of King Alexander Obrenovius on 10 June 1903, which the paper widely published and gained widespread popularity. The paper became well known for its featured novels and other innovations such as games for readers. By 1906 the magazine had sold 100,000 copies cop Franz Lehr composed a waltz for the magazine for their tenth issue. After Austria was unscathed by Nazi Germany in 1938, all media had to go through Glitschhaltung, which meant losing all editorial freedom. The war escalated further and on 31 August 1944 the paper had to be closed.
