El Moudjahid

Basic Details

El Maudjahid is an Algerian French language newspaper. It was established to inform FLN resistance fighters during the Algerian war, and after independence it became the sole party FLN government newspaper. Since the FLN was voted out of favor in 1991, the newspaper is no longer affiliated with that party. El Maudzahid originally contained FLN guerrilla information bulletins circulated among resistance fighters during the 1954-ge2 Algerian War. Its name, the French written transliteration of the Arabic muja (mujahid) means "holy warrior", whom the FLN calls his warrior. Renowned author, activist and psychiatrist Frantz Fanon wrote for the magazine during his lifetime.

After the war, in 1962 it became Algeria's leading newspaper. This single party FLN has served as a propaganda agency for the government. When Algeria introduced its closed system in 1986 and allowed the publication of independent newspapers, El Moujahid continued publishing. Today it is a state-run newspaper, but its relationship with the FLN was severed after the party lost power in the 1991 election.

It is published every day except Friday which is a weekly holiday in Algeria. The paper is headquartered in the Algiers Sea, near Parliament and the Central Bank.

Omar Belhochet, an award-winning journalist, worked at El Mawjahid early in his life. In 1990 he set out with nineteen colleagues in search of the independent El Watton.
