Bakhtar News Agency is Afghanistan's state-run news agency, based in Kabul. The agency is a major source of news for all media outlets in Afghanistan, providing information to domestic and international news outlets and outlets. The newspaper is published in Dari, English and Pashto and has a government-backed political alignment.
Prior to the 2004 election, the government had planned to free the company from government control.
In 2002, Agence France-Press established a satellite link to provide news information to Bakhtar News Agency.
Founded in 1939 by the official press department, it monitors foreign and domestic news before distribution. The English sector of news distribution was not added until 1992 to keep foreign diplomats informed about Afghan news. The Ministry of Culture and Information oversees the agency.
